Case Study: The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) – Campaigning for designated ‘Marine Conservation Zones’
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has been campaigning for the UK Government to grant 127 designated ‘Marine Conservation Zones’ around the British coastline. The campaign was also supported by other environmental NGOs – the RSPB, the Wildlife Trusts, Wildlife & Countryside Link and WWF. Third Rock Communications was asked to facilitate a workshop of all key parties to review progress of the campaign, address barriers and share learnings, and then to make its recommendations for the next stage of activity.
What We Did
Third Rock interviewed each participant ahead of the workshop to gain an understanding of each party’s view on the campaign. . We then designed a one day workshop that enabled a frank sharing of these views and a constructive method of discussing what was working and what could be improved in order to reach the campaign’s goal and agree on next steps. We recruited a national newspaper journalist to attend part of the workshop to provide an insight into what would help achieve vital national media coverage of the issues involved.
The day was attended by nine representatives of four of the participating NGOs. The workshop elicited thoughtful and important contributions from all delegates, who were keen to work together more closely in the future to achieve their common goal.
Third Rock produced a review of the workshop, together with recommendations for action and a proposed blueprint strategy for the next stage of the campaign.
“MCS and our partners were thoroughly impressed with the structure, delivery and outcomes from our Third Rock Comms workshop and I’d absolutely recommend Third Rock as a facilitator and consultant for campaign comms”.
